Castle Cary Wingwall Strengthening Works
The wingwall is the (southwestern wingwall) of a bridge at Castle Cary, Somerset.
The wingwall was previously scheduled for soil nail stabilisation as a strengthening solution however, the failure occurred before this solution could be implemented.

Background
Piletec were instructed by our client to carry out emergency reactive works to a wingwall on which a partial failure had occurred. On the 27th of January 2023. A section of the brick facing on the wingwall collapsed, which lead to the emergency temporary closure of the railway line.
The works had been separated into a short-term temporary measure to reduce risk of debris fouling the line and a permanent stabilisation solution.
(1) a short-term protection using anchored mesh to reduce the immediate risk of further instability affecting the railway line, and (2) a permanent soil nailed solution with shotcrete hard facing, incorporating the anchored mesh.
